Scientific and Professional Medical Translation Meeting


The Scientific and Professional Medical Translation Meeting (Jornadas Científicas y Profesionales de Traducción Médica) took place on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of September in the IDEC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra Auditorium. This international meeting was organised by Tremédica, the International Association of Translators and Editors in Medicine and Allied Sciences, and APTIC, the Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters of Catalonia, in collaboration with IDEC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

The meeting was opened by prestigious linguist and lexicographer José Martínez de Sousa and was organised around a series of workshops and talks of an educational and highly practical nature, given by renowned biomedical translation professionals, such as Dr. Gustavo Silva (World Health Organisation), Karina R. Tabacinic (Instituto de Enseñanza Superior en Lenguas Vivas de Buenos Aires), Javier Bezos (Fundéu BBVA), Mónica Parcet (Bayer Laboratories), Maria Antònia Julià (TERMCAT) and the director of IDEC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra’s Postgraduate Programme in Biomedical and Health Science Translation, Dr. Javier Mas, among others.

Highlights of the main subjects of focus included: orthotypography and correction, translation of prepositions in medical discourse, organic chemistry nomenclature, drug development, public health and epidemiology translation, veterinary translation, terminological criteria, social networks for medical translators, etc.

The event, which proved to be a perfect example of collaboration between professional associations and universities, was a huge success with the public and highlight just how relevant specialised translation is as a future profession.
