The UPF stays as leader in scientific productivity in Spain

[22/10/12]

The Pompeu Fabra University is the most productive university in research, according to the 2011 ranking of the Spanish public universities published in the journal Psicothema and produced by a group of researchers from the University of Granada and the University of Zaragoza led by Gualberto Buela-Casal.

The main objective of this 2011 ranking is to update it following the model of the three previous years so that the results obtained can be compared year by year. This new study, prepared in 2011, thus updates the 2010 research productivity ranking, following the same methodology as in previous years, the first of which was in 2009.

In addition to the productivity of the teaching staff, the ranking considers the total scientific production of each university, in accordance with seven indicators relating to 2011.

The indicators refer to the articles published in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), the areas of research of the lecturers with civil servant contract, the R&D projects granted by the ministry, the training scholarships obtained by the teaching staff, the PhDs with pathway to excellence award granted by the Ministry, the doctoral theses published between 2005 and 2010, the patents registered in the period 2006-2010 and those exploited from 2004-2008.

The UPF leads four of the indicators considered by the study

Paying attention to each of the assessment criteria considered in the study and weighted by lecturer with civil servant contract, the UPF obtained an excellent score and improved compared with the previous year.

The UPF is in first place in relation to total productivity, taking all the indicators into account in a weighted manner. The UPF leads the productivity ranking as regards four indicators: number of publications and of citations in prestigious journals, number of research and development (R&D) projects number of doctoral theses defended and number scholarships for training researchers obtained.

It comes second in relation to the number of PhDs with pathway to excellence award. It stays in sixth place in areas of research and improves somewhat in number of patents registered, going up to 43rd position.

The scientific productivity ranking for Spanish public universities was funded by the Directorate General for Universities of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, with the aim of creating a new tool with more appropriate assessment criteria. This new ranking is designed to overcome the methodological problems of the previous rankings.
