M. Teresa Turell i Julià, Director of the Master in Forensic Linguistics, has passed away

Maria Teresa Turell, Professor of English Linguistics in the Department of Translation and Language Sciences at Pompeu Fabra University, Director of the Forensic Linguistics Laboratory (ForensicLab) at UPF's University Institute for Applied Linguistics (IULA) and Director of the University Master in Forensic Linguistics, has passed away after a long illness on 24 April in Barcelona, at the age of 63.

The wake will be held at the Collserola funeral home (Carretera Nacional 150, Km 1.5, Montcada i Reixac) as of 4 pm on Thursday 25 April, and the funeral will be held in the same location on Friday 26 April at 12:15 pm.

Maria Teresa Turell Julià (Barcelona, 1949) held a doctorate in Catalan Philology (University of Barcelona, 1981) and was a Professor of English Linguistics, first at the University of Barcelona (1986-1992), then at Rovira i Virgili University (1992-1994) and, as of this year, at UPF.

During the nearly twenty years in which she taught at Pompeu Fabra University, Turell held a number of academic and institutional posts: Vice-dean of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation (1994-1996); Secretary General (1999-2001); the Rector's delegate for the Coordination of Affiliated Teaching Centres (1998-2001); and Director of IULA, the University Institute for Applied Linguistics (2004 and 2006).

She was President of the International Association of Forensic Linguists (IAFLM) as of 2011 and Academic Director of the University Master in Forensic Linguistics, the first course of its type in Spain, developed jointly by IDEC-UPF and IULA.

As the lead researcher of IULA's consolidated research group UVAL (the Language Variation Unit), she directed several competitive projects in the field of Forensic Idiolectometry which were pioneering in Spain, Catalonia and around the world. In the legal sphere, over the last few years she acted as an expert witness in more than sixty civil and criminal cases in Catalonia, Spain and the United States.

An expert in linguistic variation and forensic linguistics, the detection of plagiarism, the determination/attribution of authorship in written texts and trademark litigation, Professor Turell published extensively on these disciplines in different national and international journals.

Some of her papers related to language, the law and the forensic comparison of written texts that were frequently included in her work were published in journals including: The International Journal of Speech, Language and the Law; Language Variation and Change; and Language in Society.

In the field of publishing, she was a member of the editorial board of the Oxford University Press Language and Law series and of the International Journal of Speech, Language and the Law, as well as co-editor of the publication Dimensions of Forensic Linguistics (John Benjamins, 2008).

She was a regular speaker at forums dedicated to the area of forensic linguistics, both in the United States and Europe, and she supervised several doctoral theses in this discipline.
