The UPF remains among the world’s 40 best research centres in economics

[16/05/13]

The Pompeu Fabra University consolidates its position in the top 40 of the world in the 2013 Ranking Top 100 of leading research centres in the sphere of economics, elaborated since 2009 by Tilburg University (Netherlands), and once again it is the highest ranked Spanish university in this classification.

This year the Tilburg University ranking took into account the period 2008-2012, and it was calculated starting from a list of 35 reference publications in the spheres of econometrics, economics, statistics and finance, taken from a database which covers 70 publications.

It therefore includes the scientific production of the lecturers and researchers from the Department of Economics and Business and from the University’s research centres in this field during the period considered.

In the Top 100, the Pompeu Fabra University remains stable in the classification (in 37th position, one lower than in the 2012 ranking), a position which makes it the top Spanish university and 15th among European universities.

A further two Spanish universities appear in the ranking. After the UPF, the second highest ranked university is the Carlos III of Madrid, in 40th place (going up two positions in relation to the previous year), followed by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in 89th position (last year it was 80th).

Looking at the top ten in the worldwide classification, it can be seen that the ranking is clearly dominated by American universities. In particular, and in this order, the ranking is headed by the universities of Harvard, Chicago, Stanford, MIT, California-Berkeley, Columbia, Northwestern, New York, Yale and Pennsylvania.

The first European university is in eleventh position (the London School of Economics and Political Science, in the United Kingdom). Two of the three other European universities that we find in the top twenty places are also British (Oxford, in 13th position, and University College London, which comes 20th), accompanied by Tilburg University (Netherlands), in 19th place.
