Ferran Adrià, patron of the 2013 cohort, encourages the graduates to be creative

[03/07/13]

IDEC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Barcelona School of Management held the graduation ceremony on Monday for the 1,800 students who have successfully completed their master’s and postgraduate programmes, with an exceptional patron, the chef and creator Ferran Adrià. During his speech to the graduates, Adrià analysed the change represented by the internet in our way of communicating and receiving knowledge. Adrià spoke about what this means when it comes to renewing and offering quality training to those who will be the leaders who make the future decisions in society.

One of the keys that the Catalan chef offered was the need to order all the knowledge that the internet and the new ways of transmitting information are generating, and he exemplified this with his Bullipedia project. Far from rigid and static recipes, Ferran Adrià wanted to provoke the most creative part of those who have spent a whole year perfecting their level of knowledge in one of the numerous academic disciplines of IDEC-UPF and the Barcelona School of Management.

“We must order the huge quantity of knowledge that we receive reliably and efficiently – he indicated – so that at the same time it is of use to you to create and innovate in everything you can”. This philosophy of life, which has resulted in so much success for Adrià and which is the essence of his Bullipedia project, coincides fully with the spirit of the postgraduate training centres belonging to the Pompeu Fabra University.

The Rector of the Pompeu Fabra University, Jaume Casals PhD, echoed Adrià’s reflections and recalled that what is most important on applying good postgraduate training is to generate leaders capable of creating and making their own decisions. This is the only way not to make the same mistakes which have led us to undesired situations and to promote a society in which people can freely decide on the path they wish to follow in their work and their life.

The Rector congratulated all the graduates of the twenty-first cohort of IDEC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the second cohort of the Barcelona School of Management. In the words of Casals, “the recently created school of management demonstrates the UPF’s commitment to quantitative analysis applied to the training of managers”.

The Graduation Ceremony of the 2013 cohort of IDEC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Barcelona School of Management brought together almost 2,100 graduates, relatives and lecturers in the Auditorium of the Barcelona Forum. This cohort, sponsored by Ferran Adrià, has 1,800 students from 120 master’s and postgraduate programmes.
