Candaya publishes ‘Anatomia de la memoria’, a result of the 1st Han Nefkens Grant for the Master in Literary Creation

[27/03/14]

Anatomía de la memoria is a book by Eduardo Ruiz Sosa, published by Candaya publishing, as a result of the 1st Han Nefkens Grant for the The UPF-IDEC Master in Literary Creation. This grant, created in 2012 in order to promote the publication of literary works, is a joint initiative of the Han Nefkens Foundation and the Pompeu Fabra University. That year it was awarded to Eduardo Ruiz Sosa, allowing him to read the one year Master in Literary Creation at the UPF-IDEC and write the novel. The grant is comprised of a monthly amount of 1,300 euros for the whole year, plus the cost of the Master and the subsequent publishing of the book.

Eduardo Ruiz Sosa was born in Culiacan, (Mexico), in 1983 and has been living in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona) since 2006. He read the Master during the 2012-2013 academic year, and worked on the novel Anatomía de la memoria which is just coming out now. The novel is about the need for the rebellion in current day Mexico and the situation concerning violence, desolation and neglect. The originality and complexity of its structure is striking, the way it is written in the form of the anatomical treatise, by dissecting the mechanisms, traps and difficulties of the memory. ‘It’s the first piece of work published as a result of this grant, the objective of which is, precisely, to encourage the creation and production of contemporary works at a time when publishing has become difficult due to the economic situation that we are living’, explains Jorge Carrión, coordinator of the Master in Literary Creation.

One of the objectives of the UPF-IDEC Master in Literary Creation is, precisely, to promote and publish literary works. Candaya publishing has already taken part in several initiatives such as the publication of Emergencias. Doce cuentos iberoamericanos was also created by students reading this Master’s programme. ‘The Master is totally taught by writers and intended to train writers, but it also aims to act as a promoter and encourage connections between writers and publishers.

The next offer for the Han Nefkens grant is planned for the 2015-2016 academic year. The winner of the second edition was Matias Candeira who is currently reading the Master in Literary Creation at the IDEC-UPF and working on what will be his first novel.
