Two students from UPF Barcelona School of Management will participate in the international event This Way Up

[09/06/14]

Two students from UPF Barcelona School of Management have been chosen to participate in the international event This Way Up, a meeting that will gather over 200 CEOs and top managers from some 35 countries in Barcelona.
This Way Up is an initiative by Dave Darsch, American entrepreneur who created the CEO Collaborative Forum in Barcelona. The objective of this forum is to exchange ideas and entrepreneurial challenges between senior managers of European businesses, with the idea of being of mutual help to one another and to become worldwide companies. In order to become a member of the Forum, it would be required that candidates’ business have a clear international outlook, as well as international offices, activity in at least three countries, annual turnover of more than two million euros, be experienced in attracting external investment and they would need at least five years of experience in senior management at their company. New prospective members are always presented by members of the Forum so the organization works like a private club.

The annual This Way Up meeting will take place this year on 16 and 17 June at Pompeu Fabra University’s Balmes building right in the centre of Barcelona, with attendance from the dean at UPF Barcelona School of Management, Ana Valenzuela, as marketing expert. The organization has also allowed Pompeu Fabra’s business school to let two students this year participate in a session with senior managers, a unique and exclusive experience for them that “will signify an enormously valuable learning experience for our students” ensures Valenzuela.

The two students chosen from This Way Up’s selection process are Lena Raps and Guillermo Nafarrete, students studying on the Master of Science in International Business and Master in Management (Specialization Finance & Corporate Banking), respectively.

Problem solving and confidence building

For two days, the participants on This Way Up will divide into groups and participate in different problem solving sessions for common questions that affect businesses on a global level. Each group will be directed by a leader who will present a real problem from a company and guide the discussion so that the participating CEO can use their experience to propose a solution to the challenge. Among those participating this year, are CEO of Shazam, American Express, Nasdaq, Ofertia, Zyncro, and many other services and new technology companies that have entered into the market explosively in recent years. For this reason, all sessions are confidential, although participants do receive a full transcript of the session, together with their contributions and collection of new, fresh ideas for their respective companies. There will be sessions dedicated to getting the most out of the director’s board and advisors; to contracting and developing talent, and to accessing finance in order to grow, marketing, penetrating the marketplace, and new markets.
