YouTube and Spotify enter into a global battle


Six years have passed since Spotify burst on the scene with its streaming service, and digital music consumptionhas not been the same since. “There are other companies offering similar services but Spotify is untouchable in the music streaming market,” claims David Loscos, academic director of the Postgraduate Course in Company Management in the Music Industry  at UPF-IDEC.

According to Loscos, the recent launch of YouTube Music Key means that Spotify and Youtube are entering into a global battle to be at the forefront of subscription digital music consumption. The services have different priorities; while Spotify’s free service (with playlists and integration with applications and social networks) is merely a way to seduce users in the hope that they will finally pay for a subscription, for YouTube the free model with advertising is already a business in itself.
