UPF is among the world’s best universities in nine subjects

[04/05/15]

QS subject 2015The fifth edition of the ranking by subject published by QS every year since 2011 has placed nine of Universitat Pompeu Fabra’s programs among the best in the world, from a total of 22 evaluated.

Consequently, the Accounting and Finance, Communication and Media Studies, Law, Economics and Econometrics, Linguistics, Politics and International Studies programs are joined in this year’s edition of the ranking by their counterparts in Modern Languages, Biology and Medicine (these last two listed in block 301 to 350).   In fact, traditionally the QS subject ranking only included the 200 best universities in the world in each discipline; however, for the 2015 edition, those in charge of the ranking decided to increase the number of universities to 400 for certain disciplines, on the basis that there is “greater volume” in those subject areas.

In terms of individual subjects, notable results include UPF’s Economics and Econometrics program, which rose to 23rd in the world, or 6th within Europe (2nd if we only count universities in Continental Europe) and 1st within Spain.

Table 1 shows the progress made in the ranking by different subjects at UPF over the course of the last three years.

QS began producing rankings by subject in 2011. Since then the number of subjects evaluated has increased and currently stands at 36.  For the 2015 edition over 3,500 universities were evaluated, of which only 900 (approx.) feature in the ranking. QS based this ranking on three key types of data: evaluations by academics and employers, obtained through surveys on university reputation, and data from Scopus, which was used to calculate the number of citations for each researcher. An index was then applied, which made it possible to quantify the scientific productivity of a given researcher and the impact of their articles.
