Public Health to include Chikungunya on the list of diseases of obligatory declaration

[16/09/15]

• The Catalan Public Health Agency and Pompeu Fabra University have been collaborating for years in training professionals through their Postgraduate course in Public Health taught at UPF Barcelona School of Management

• “Our environment is exposed to risk due to the presence of one of the vectors that can transmit the virus, the tiger mosquito”, explains Mireia Jané, lecturer on the Postgraduate and General Deputy Director of Vigilance and Response to Public Health Emergencies

The first non-imported infection of Chikungunya in Spain last August caused alerts to be raised, and accelerated the Catalan Government’s decision, upon the petition of the Public Health Agency, to approve the decree that includes 18 new illnesses in the register for diseases of obligatory declaration, according to reports by the Catalan Public Health Agency for the Postgraduate course in Public Health. The Catalan Public Health Agency keeps a record of 64 diseases of obligatory declaration, and has recently recommended the inclusion of chikungunya, dengue, and other diseases transmitted by vectors, such as arbovirosis. Infection by the Chikungunya virus causes symptoms similar to malaria, such as high fever, skin rashes and joint pains, which may last for months, and should be taken into account when travelling to endemic areas. “Our environment is exposed to risk due to the presence of one of the vectors that can transmit the virus, the tiger mosquito”, explains Mireia Jané, lecturer on the Postgraduate course in Public Health at Pompeu Fabra University and General Deputy Director of Vigilance and Response to Public Health Emergencies.
