Josep Ma. Casasús, Director of the Master’s in Communication Management, recipient of La Creu de Sant Jordi 2011


On 27 April at the Saló de Sant Jordi the 2011 Creus de Sant Jordi (St George's Crosses) were awarded, one of the highest awards a person or institution can receive from the Catalan Government.

One of the recipients was the journalist and lecturer Josep Maria Casasús i Guri, for his career in the press and renowned academic activity. A pioneer in the research, disclosure and projection of journalism in our country, Professor Casasús has written extensive collections of essays and was founder and chairman of the Societat Catalana de Comunicació and the Sociedad Española de Periodística, entities through which he has worked tirelessly on behalf of Catalan culture.

Josep Maria Casasús i Guri (Barcelona, 1944), has a doctorate in Information Sciences from the UAB, is a journalist and essayist, numerary member of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, professor of Journalism and dean of the Communications Faculty at Pompeu Fabra University.  

He obtained the extraordinary doctoral award for this thesis on the journalism of Josep Pla, the first time the latter had been defended as a doctoral topic. As a writer of articles, he has received the Gaziel, Avui and Joan Mañé i Flaquer awards. Within the field of essays, he has been awarded the Xarxa, Josep Vallverdú and Carles Rahola prizes. He is the Catalan communications and journalism researcher who has published most books and articles on these subjects. With his first work, Ideología y análisis de medios de comunicación (1972), he introduced into Spain structural journalistic analysis methods applied to the media.
